Large Masks

Welcome to Alberto Villalobos’ Gallery of Large Masks!

“Alberto Villalobos opens the door to the mysteriously beautiful and sometimes surreal world beyond Mexico’s metropolises; a world synthesized through rural music, colores and textures that reflects the political uncertainties of the indigenous people in the south of the country. His murals, masks and triptychs are dreamlike portals into the colors and textures of distant villages in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas.

His collection of nineteen acrylic-painted papier-ma?che? masks imaginatively draws upon symbols of ancient wisdom, mystical animals, and the insurgent revolutionary movement to protect the rights of the indigenous people in southern Chiapas. His detailed craftsmanship, earthy textures and luminous hues give his masks an aura of magic, of happiness, of connection to nature. Inspired by the Alebrijes Folk Art of Oaxaca, they are a reflection of his fight to preserve the rich indigenous heritage while still developing his own characteristic style.”
